How to Create a Project in Claude and Connect it to Google Drive

A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Overview

Claude Projects let you organise conversations, instructions, and files around a specific goal. By connecting a Project to Google Drive, Claude can read your Drive files and save outputs directly to your chosen folder — keeping everything in one place.

Prerequisites

  • A Claude account (free or Pro) at claude.ai
  • A Google account with Google Drive
  • The Google Drive connector enabled in Claude (see Step 3)

Part 1 — Create a Claude Project

Step 1: Open Claude and Navigate to Projects

  1. Go to claude.ai and sign in to your Claude account if you are not already logged in.
  2. Look for the “Projects” section in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Click “New Project” or the "+" icon next to Projects.

💡 Tip: Projects appear in the sidebar alongside your regular conversations. If you do not see the sidebar, click the menu icon in the top-left corner.

Step 2: Name and Configure Your Project

  1. Give your project a clear, descriptive name (e.g., “Python Learning”).
  2. Optionally add a project description to remind yourself of its purpose.
  3. In the “Project Instructions” field, add any standing instructions you want Claude to follow for every conversation in this project — for example: “Always save summaries to my Google Drive Python_learn folder.”
  4. Click “Create Project” to save.

💡 Tip: Project Instructions act like a permanent system prompt for all chats inside that project. Use them to set your preferred tone, format, or workflow.

Part 2 — Connect Google Drive to Claude

Step 3: Enable the Google Drive Connector

  1. Inside your project, look for the “Tools” or “Connectors” section (usually shown as an icon in the chat input area or in the project settings).
  2. Click “Add Tools” or “Connect Apps”.
  3. Find “Google Drive” in the list of available connectors and click “Connect”.
  4. A Google sign-in popup will appear. Choose the Google account whose Drive you want to link.
  5. Click “Allow” to grant Claude the necessary permissions to read and write files in your Drive.
  6. You will be redirected back to Claude. Google Drive should now show as a connected tool.

💡 Tip: Claude only accesses files and folders you explicitly refer to in the conversation — it does not browse your entire Drive automatically.

Step 4: Verify the Connection

  1. In the project chat, type: “List recent files in my Google Drive” to confirm the connection is working.
  2. Claude should respond with a list of recent files from your Drive.
  3. If you see an error, disconnect and reconnect the Google Drive connector and try again.

Part 3 — Using Claude with Google Drive in Your Project

Step 5: Save Claude Outputs to Google Drive

Once connected, you can ask Claude to create documents and save them to a specific folder in your Drive. For example:

“Create a study notes document for Day 1 of my Python plan and save it to my Python_learn folder in Google Drive.”

Claude will:

  • Generate the document content.
  • Create the file in Google Drive using the connected connector.
  • Return a direct link so you can open it immediately.

Step 6: Read Existing Drive Files in Claude

You can also ask Claude to read files already in your Drive:

“Read my Python_learn/One Week Python 3 Learning Plan from Google Drive and summarise Day 3 for me.”

💡 Tip: For best results, tell Claude the exact folder name and file name. You can also share a Google Drive link directly in the chat.

Step 7: Organise Files into Folders

  1. When asking Claude to save a file, specify the folder name: “Save this to my Python_learn folder.”
  2. If the folder does not exist yet, ask Claude to create it: “Create a folder called Python_learn in my Google Drive.”
  3. To move a file, ask Claude: “Copy this file to my Python_learn folder and I will delete the original.”

💡 Tip: Claude cannot permanently delete files from Google Drive — only move them to a new location or copy them. Deletion must be done manually in Google Drive.

Part 4 — Tips for an Effective Workflow

Best Practices

  • Use clear folder names in Google Drive (e.g., Python_learn, Projects/Claude) so Claude can find them easily.
  • Add a standing instruction in your Project settings to always save outputs to a specific folder — this saves you from repeating it every time.
  • Start each session with a brief context message like: “We are continuing my Python 3 learning plan. Today is Day 3.”
  • Ask Claude to summarise completed sessions and save the summary to Drive for future reference.

Example Project Instructions

Paste something like this into your Project Instructions field:

“You are my Python 3 learning assistant. Save all notes, summaries, and exercises to my Google Drive folder called Python_learn. Use clear headings and include code examples where relevant.”

Troubleshooting

Google Drive not connecting

  • Make sure you are signed in to the correct Google account.
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting the connector in Claude settings.
  • Check that pop-ups are not blocked in your browser.

Claude cannot find my folder

  • Double-check the exact folder name — spelling and capitalisation matter.
  • Try providing the full path: Python_learn or share the Google Drive folder link directly.

File saved in wrong location

  • Manually move the file in Google Drive.
  • Update your Project Instructions to specify the exact folder path for future saves.
